Office of Alder Darryl Brackeen Seeking Applicants for Internships

The Office of Alder Darryl Brackeen are looking for a very limited group of hardworking and motivated interns to fill various positions for his Legislative Office in City Hall. Interns will gain a first-hand experience of local government, while assisting in all aspects of a high-volume City Council office and assistance in neighborhood organizing.

All majors welcome, but students with a solid interest or experience in government, politics and/or social work are strongly encouraged to apply. Knowledge of the City of New Haven preferred (but not required). All internships are unpaid, although we do encourage interns to seek academic credit for their internships. The hourly commitment is flexible based on availability, but 10-15 hours per week is recommended. Start and end dates are flexible.

Positions Available:

Generalist

The Generalist will assist our office with administrative tasks dealing with community surveys.

Skills Required:

  • Strong interest in community outreach
  • Familiar with phone banking
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills
  • Must be able to commit to 10-15 hours a week
  • Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational skills

Communications Intern

The Communications Intern will assist our office with projects related to social media, media relations, and website development.

Responsibilities and duties include:

  • Front-end web development: update Darryl’s site with photos, press hits, and public letters
  • Research journalists to expand our press list and pitch targeted stories
  • Take photos at press conferences and other events
  • Compile the monthly events calendar e-blast
  • Help with the organization of future events
  • Draft press releases, talking points, and content for Darryl’s website

Skills Required:

  • Strong interest in communications
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills
  • Must be able to commit to 10-15 hours a week
  • Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational skills
  •   Experience with Word Press (Interest in front-end web development)

SeeClickFix & Complete Streets Intern

The SeeClickFix & Complete street Intern will assist our office with projects related to SeeClickFix, complete streets, traffic, transportation, & community building.

Responsibilities and duties include:

  • Maintain SeeClickFix account (responding, reporting voting, sharing, posting)
  • Complete streets neighborhood street audit & report
  • Create a community building project with Go New Haven Go
  • Legislation around traffic and speeding

 Strong interest in transportation, community building
 Strong verbal and written communications skills
 Must be able to commit to 10-15 hours a week
 Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational skills


Community Engagement Internship

The community engagement internship involves conducting a comprehensive district survey, data collection, & polling around the concerns of the communities needs.

Responsibilities and duties include:

  • Conducting comprehensive district survey
  • Grassroots organizing (which may include building a canvassing team)
  • Coordinate phone banks
  • Voter registration drives in district
  • Data collection & reporting
  • Assisting with campaign events

  • Any previous experience in organizing, campaigns or professional office environments are appreciated but not required

State Legislative Liaison Internship

Job Description: To observe, learn and support the legislative process through direct experience performing a variety of assigned duties, and track progressive legislative priorities on behalf of the Office of Alderman Darryl Brackeen Jr.

Responsibilities and duties include:

Excellent verbal and written communication skills; Critical thinking skills; Computer skills and knowledge of computer software including Microsoft Word; Ability to deal effectively and tactfully with legislators, staff, and the public; Strong desire to learn the legislative process through hands-on experience.

Skills Required:

Conducts research; Attends public hearings, committee meetings, or other events to observe; gather information; or to assist; Possibly attend both House and Senate Sessions; Writes letters, speeches, & testimony;  Tracks, analyzes, and reports on proposed legislation;


Environmental Impact Internship I

Job Description: This internship is ideal for individuals interested in learning more about the environmental policy & programs in order to advance the environmentally friendly cause in the City of New Haven as well as those passionate about community service and civic engagement. Program interns will focus on organizing meetings, community outreach, and various administrative and operations work. Some experience in non-profit/government settings preferred but not required.

Responsibilities will include:

Conduct research and prepare content for educational materials, including info sheets, facilitation materials, participant guides, and PowerPoint presentations, including working with City Council Members and staff, community groups and city residents update and prepare content for publicity materials. Maintain contact databases. Aid in community engagement efforts. Assist with content and management of social media and website

The ideal candidate will have:

Strong interest in social justice and community organizing. Strong communication, writing, and organizational skills. Experience or interest working with non-profit organizations/government. Strong skills working with Powerpoint, Word, and other relevant software and platforms. Ability to work independently.


 Legislative Intern II

We are seeking a reliable individual to support Alder Darryl Brackeen Jr, in his work as he seeks to collaborate with other young progressive elected’s in the state of CT.

Responsibilities and duties:

Researching different policy initiatives that affect our city and state. Database maintenance. Writing policy reports. Summarizing and analyzing policy briefs. Schedule meet and greets. Administrative tasks on outreach to progressive young officials statewide.

Requirements:

Excellent research and analytical skills. Well organized student in good academic standing. Strong interest in collaborative projects with young elected officials state wide. Ability to commit at least 15 hours a week


Budgeting Internship (PB Intern)

Location: City Hall & Neighborhood

This internship is ideal for individuals interested in learning more about the budget process in the City of New Haven. Program interns will focus the city budget, community outreach, research and evaluation of existing PB processes, and various administrative and operations work.

Strong communication, writing, accounting & finance, and organizational skills Experience or interest working with non-profit organizations/government Strong skills working with Powerpoint, Word, and other relevant software and platforms Ability to work independently
