Who is Darryl Brackeen Jr ?

Darryl Brackeen Jr. is life-long New Haven resident. Brackeen attended New Haven Public Schools (Mauro, Sheridan, and James Hillhouse). Brackeen is a graduate of Fairfield University and holds a Bachelors of Arts degree in Political Science and History. In October 2014, Darryl joined Connecticut Coalition for Achievement Now (ConnCAN) with extensive experience as an educator, mentor, and community organizer. He brings expertise in managing political campaigns in New Haven and its Westville neighborhood, in particular.

Brackeen is a former social studies educator at Lincoln Bassett school and served as Dean of Students. Brackeen is also the founding director for the Bridgeport Youth Club at James Curiale School, located in Bridgeport, CT.   

Brackeen serves as the executive director of Vision 4:12 youth social justice program and board member of the Connecticut Tennis Open. He is a former steering committee member and liaison for the Greater New Haven Help Alliance’s (Adopt-A-School Initiative),  and founding board member for local prison re-entry program, Immunity in the Community,

Notably, Darryl Brackeen is the first African-American & youngest Alderman on the City of New Haven City Council to be elected from the 26th district. Brackeen was first elected in 2014, currently serving his second term. In his elected capacity, he serves on the Living Wage Commission, Youth Committee (former member), Human Services Committee, Legislation Committee, Vice Chair of the Education Committee, and Affirmative Action Commission. Notably championing, the City of New Haven’s Clean Air Resolution, being the first city in the state to do so. Domestic Workers Bill of Rights & Janitors Bill of Rights, which was also adopted by the New Haven Board of Alders and signed by Mayor Toni Harp. Lastly, the successful passage of CT’s student loan bill of rights, and countless other pieces of legislation and initiatives.

Brackeen was chosen as a delegate to the National League of Cities and serves as Connecticut State Director Young Elected Officials Network. Darryl Brackeen was selected as CPTV Connecticut Magazine’s, “40 Under 40”, which features the state’s up-and-comers. Darryl believes, “the only way to pay forward all of the great opportunities I was given I dedicated my life to giving back.” He wants to use all that he has for his community to ensure that all people can see betters day’s ahead full of hope and prosperity. Brackeen is happily married to the love of his life Chaz Brackeen.
